Promoting a Positive Business Climate
Oregon’s economy is slowly improving. Just the same, many families continue to struggle and Oregon’s unemployment remains as one of the highest in the nation. Attorney General Kroger wants Oregon’s Department of Justice to do its share to assure that businesses may grow and prosper in Oregon. A robust, prosperous, and resilient economy is critical to achieving the vision we all share for our state.
To accomplish this goal, the Department of Justice is collaborating with the leaders of Oregon's businesses, large and small, representatives of labor, as well as the state's political leaders to take meaningful steps to enhance Oregon's business climate. To date, Attorney General Kroger:
- Formed the Attorney General’s Business Advisory Council to engage with representatives of the business community and to develop new ideas for growing Oregon’s economy;
- In concert with the Oregon University System, streamlined the state’s technology transfer process so that the commercially feasible ideas and processes conceived within Oregon’s universities may quickly be transferred to private businesses;
- Settled a major lawsuit with Daimler AG (Freightliner) to help retain hundreds of jobs in Portland;
- Appointed a Special Counsel for Business to address business issues which come before the Department of Justice and to advise the Attorney General on business affairs within the state; and
- Co-sponsored, along with Governor John Kitzhaber and State COO Michael Jordan, the Governor's Regulatory Streamlining Project to identify regulatory impediments to the growth of Oregon businesses and to develop a long-term strategy to streamline and simplify the state’s regulatory arena.
Note: Oregon law prohibits the Attorney General and employees of the Department of Justice from providing legal advice to private individuals or companies (ORS 180.060).
